Introduction to Education of Postgraduates of XJTU
Jiaotong University began its postgraduate programs in 1931 and enrolled over 200 postgraduates in 1956 when the university was relocated to Xi’an. The Graduate School of Xi'an Jiaotong University was China's first group of 22 universities that were set up graduate schools in 1984. It was then the only graduate school in Northwest China. Currently, the university is authorized to confer Master’s and PhD degrees in 10 disciplinary fields, namely, science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, education, and art. Among all the disciplines, the University is authorized to confer PhD degrees in 27 first-level disciplines, Master’s degrees in 45 first-level disciplines, and professional degrees (2 PhD degrees and 20 master's degrees) in 22 specialized fields. Xi'an Jiaotong University boasts 8 state key disciplines of the first-level, 8 state key disciplines of the second-level, and 3 state key (nurtured) disciplines of the second-level. In the Disciplinary Evaluation of China's Higher Education Institutions of 2012, 5 first-level disciplines of the university ranked first or among the top 5% in the country.
Xi'an Jiaotong University has enjoyed great prestige for having accomplished academic masters and outstanding talents. It has implemented a strategy of strengthening the university through nurturing talent, accelerating training and introducing teaching and research backbones. At present, the university has staff members who are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nation-level master teachers, winners of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and Cheung Kong Scholars professors. These academicians serve as the mainstay of its faculty and lay a solid foundation for talents training and scientific research. At present, the university has a faculty and staff of 5,569 people, including 2,753 full-time teachers, over 1,600 professors and associate professors (960 doctoral advisors). The university has on its faculty 23 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, among whom 13 are members of both academies. There are 6 winners of the National Teaching Master Award, 50 Cheung Kong Scholars professors and guest professors conferred by the Ministry of Education, 34 winners of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 16 experts who have made outstanding contributions to the nation, 46 academic leaders in the Cheung Kong Scholars and Innovative Team Development Plan, Thousand Talents Program and Thousand Young Talents Program. Additionally, 211 people are listed in the Ministry of Education New-century Program for Promising Young Talents. 13 professors and experts serve on the Sixth Disciplinary Appraisal Panel of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, and 535 professors and experts have been awarded the honor of the Expert Receiving Special Government Stipends for the Outstanding Contributions to China.
Xi'an Jiaotong University has 5 national-level state key laboratories, 4 state specialized laboratories, 2 state centers for engineering research, 59 key research institutes at the provincial and ministerial levels, and 20 post-doctoral research stations, all of which play a prominent role in innovation-oriented education for graduate students. Meanwhile, the university has constructed 10 innovative experiment platforms for graduates, offered lectures in top-quality courses for West China graduates, opened up summer school courses, created "the Chuangyuan Forum". Further, XJTU has implemented plans for overseas study, collaborative training programs, attending high-level international conferences for doctoral degree candidates, so as to promote the sustainable and speedy development of university’s innovation-oriented graduate education and lift the training of high-quality talents to a higher level.
At present, Xi’an Jiaotong University houses over 15,000 full-time graduate students (including over 4,000 doctoral candidates), and over 6,000 part-time graduate students. In recent years, the university has been annually admitting approximately 5,000 full-time graduates, including about 1,000 doctoral candidates and about 3,800 Master's degree candidates. The university's graduate education has been enjoying a constant increase in scale and steady improvement in quality.
By the end of June 2014, Xi'an Jiaotong University had conferred over 7,700 doctor's degrees and over 51,000 master's degrees in total. It won 6 national teaching achievement awards in graduate education, 27 doctoral dissertations were selected to win "the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations Award" and 46 doctoral dissertations were nominated for the award. Four graduates won the title of "Holder of Master's Degree in Engineering with Outstanding Contributions to the Nation". Graduates of Xi’an Jiaotong University are playing an important role in the country's construction and are composing a glorious chapter through their efforts and enthusiasm to contribute to the society.
