2021 China Obesity Prevention and Control Conference held in iHarbour

The 2021 China Obesity Prevention and Control Conference & the Inaugurating Ceremony of Obesity Prevention and Control Branch under the Chinese Nutrition Society was held at iHarbour from April 10 to 12.

 

It was organized by the Chinese Nutrition Society, the National Institute for Nutrition and Health with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Global Health Institute and the Health Science Center of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and co-organized by the Health Sub-Alliance under the University Alliance of the Silk Road.

Leaders, experts and scholars in the obesity prevention and control field of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the National Health Commission, as well as institutions, hospitals and universities were in attendance; totaling over 400 representatives from all over the world.

As the chair of the conference, Professor Wang Youfa, Dean of the XJTU Global Health Institute, was elected to be the leading member.

 

  

At the conference, leaders of domestic and foreign well-known organizations delivered speeches, saying that at the starting point of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), the prevention and control of obesity and related chronic diseases is a key measure to realize national health, and the establishment of the Obesity Prevention and Control Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society is of great significance to solving related problems in China and the world.

Other participants also reported on their ideas and the latest progress in the era of regular epidemic control from the perspectives of life cycle, monitoring of child growth and development and early intervention.

The conference also set up special debates, where the participating representatives were able to fully interact with each other. There were two round table discussions and question and answer sessions themed on "Causes and Consequences of the Obesity Epidemic" and "Application of Multidisciplinary Integrationin Obesity Prevention and Control".

The conference released the "China Obesity Prevention and Control Proposal" jointly proposed by the Obesity Prevention and Control Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society and the Global Health Institute of Xi'an Jiaotong University.

 

In this proposal, mobilization of the whole society is promoted, including multi-sectoral and cross-sector actions. The initiatives include healthy lifestyles, strengthening of international exchanges and cooperation, timely and effective control of the occurrence and development of obesity and related chronic diseases, joint building of a "healthy China", and exploration and summarizing of China's experience. These all help to build a community with a shared healthy future for mankind.

The conference provided solutions and plans for obesity prevention and control, and took up a vision for combating this problem in the future. It will be a platform for exchange of academic knowledge and ideas, and will bring more opportunities for cooperation.

The Obesity Prevention and Control Branch under the Chinese Nutrition Society will further carry out obesity prevention and control-related academic exchanges and popular science activities so as to serve the society. It will also play an active role in connecting the Party and government and scientific and technological workers, and make more contributions to the building of a "healthy China".
