Overview of the School of Aerospace      


The School of Aerospace, established on 10 April, 2005, is an integration of the Department of Engineering Mechanics and three mechanics-related Divisions. The School has expanded from a body of 50 students in the late 1970s to almost 900 students now. Today, it’s a vigorous school with four departments, one state key laboratory and one national-level education center. The school comprises the following departments and divisions: Astronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Scientific Computation and Structural Design, the State Key Laboratories for Strength and Vibration of Mechanical Structures, and the National Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.      


The mission of the school is to cultivate engineer leaders with a global perspective and to take the lead in science and technology with high-impact research projects.


The school has built up a national and international reputation for the innovative educational programs. It offers bachelor’s degree in engineering mechanics, engineering structure analysis, flight vehicle design and engineering. It also offers master’s and PhD degrees in mechanics, aeronautical and astronautic science.


With the establishment of the International Center for Applied Mechanics in 2012, and the increase of the number of international students and staff, the School has developed a truly internationalized atmosphere for higher education, emphasizing both fundamentals and applications. The school takes part in extensive worldwide research collaboration and student exchange programs with universities and institutes in the USA, UK, Japan, France, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, etc.  


Also, some staff members of the school serve as editor-in-chief on three international journals and one national key journalInternational Journal of Applied Mechanics, International Journal of Aerospace and Lightweight Structures, International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Engineering, and Chinese Journal of Applied Mechanics.


Currently, the school has a staff of 128 people, including 90 faculty members (38 professors, 36 associate professors and 16 assistant professors) and 38 technicians and administration staff. The majority of faculty members obtained their PhD degrees from top universities and institutions at home and abroad, including Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Tokyo, Columbia University, National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, etc.


The School is ranked high among peer institutions both nationally and globally. Many faculty members are well-known nationally and abroad for their outstanding expertise in research and teaching. With one of the first departments of Engineering Mechanics (1957) in China as its predecessor, the School of Aerospace of Xi’an Jiaotong University has a reputation for innovative programs, cutting-edge research, leading faculty, and aspiring students. It has earned a strong reputation as a center for academic excellence.


The School’s Alumni have also earned a favorable international reputation in the field of solid mechanics and applied mechanics. Many alumni have become internationally recognized academician and scholars, such as Prof. Suo Zhigang (graduated from Harvard University, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA), Prof. Gao Huajian (graduated from Brown University, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA), and so on. In addition, there are also a number of alumni serving in important positions in provincial and central government of China, as well as in leading industries.


Over the last ten years, the School has gained many national level awards, for example, six projects won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, and another six won National Prize of Progress in the National Science and Technology Awards as well as National Prize for National Technology Invention Awards, etc. Furthermore, the School, as the chief organizer, has led five “973 projects” (the national development project on key basic research) since 2005. The school has amassed about 50 million RMB in annual research funding.


Based on two National-level research and education bases, namely, the State Key Laboratories for Strength and Vibration of Mechanical Structures, and the National Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the School strives to assist students in developing their capabilities to successfully and sustainably deal with major aerospace engineering challenges in the future by providing high quality, innovative educational programs, and by offering interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary research opportunities.
