Yong Jiale, a PhD member in the research group led by Professor Chen Feng, XJTU School of Electronics and Information, secures his research a special coverage in the name of "Fish and Flowers Inspire Diving Goggle Material". The research is inspired by the unique features of the fish scales and petals of Diphylleia grayi:the fish scales shows oil repellency while the petals of Diphylleia grayichange from white to transparent when rain falls.

The researchers adopt femtosecond laser treatment to create rough nanoscale structures on the silica glass surface. When in water, a water-capturing layer is formed as water occupies the space of the rough nanoscale structures. The layer effectively impedes the contact of the oil and surface, making the surface underwater superoleophobic, namely, the feature of anti-oil. Meanwhile, the rough silica glass has a closer transmittance in an aqueous medium in comparison to that in air, bringing a largely abating scattering effect with an underwater transparency over 90%. The anti-oil underwater surfaces of this kind would find its important application in underwater optics and biological imaging.

Related to the research, Yong's first-authored paper "Bioinspired Transparent Underwater Superoleophobic and Anti-Oil Surfaces gets published in the world-famous chemistry journal J. Mater. Chem. A as a front cover. Another paper of Yong: "Reversible Underwater Lossless Oil Droplet Transportation" also occupies the front cover inAdv. Mater. Interface, a branch journal of the renowned Applied Materials (AM).
