Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), a key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, is one of China's oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions, enjoying a strong reputation.

Since relocating to Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, generations of XJTU members have cultivated the ‌Westward Relocation Spirit‌, which is among the first batch of China's communist spirits.

Sheng Xuanhuai, a renowned industrialist and educator, founded the Shanghai-based Nanyang Mission College in 1896. In 1921, the college changed its name to Jiaotong University. Starting in 1956, faculty and students relocated to Xi'an in batches. In 1959, the Xi'an branch of Jiaotong University was officially named Xi'an Jiaotong University.

According to data released by Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in May of this year, 19 disciplines at XJTU ranked in the top 1 percent globally among academic institutions, with six disciplines ranking in the top one-thousandth. Among them, engineering ranked in the top one-ten-thousandth, making it eighth globally.

XJTU is now a comprehensive research university with 11 major disciplines: science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and inter-disciplines. The university has 34 schools, departments, and centers, nine colleges for undergraduates, and three affiliated hospitals. It also has 6,754 faculty and staff members, including 3,813 full-time teachers.

The university has 62,089 students, comprising 25,595 undergraduates, 32,565 postgraduates, and 3,929 international students from 136 countries. It offers 77 undergraduate majors, and has 43 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 45 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, seven majors authorized to confer professional doctoral degrees, and 31 majors authorized to confer professional master's degrees.

XJTU has 34 postdoctoral research stations, eight national first-level key disciplines, eight national second-level key disciplines, and three national key or nurturing disciplines.

It has built the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour (iHarbour) and constructed eight major platforms, 30 research institutes, and over 400 research bases and think tanks focusing on four primary areas: science, engineering, medicine, and the humanities.

XJTU has achieved numerous landmark successes in scientific research both domestically and internationally, including the establishment of China's first institute of engineering thermophysics and the introduction of the first majors in steam turbines, automobile manufacturing, refrigeration, and low-temperature compressors, as well as energy storage. It has developed China's first large-scale general-purpose electronic computer and the first digital processing chip with independent intellectual property rights. It was also the first to propose the Unified Strength Theory of Double Shear internationally.

XJTU boasts a national base for cultural and high-quality education, along with 144 student societies and a diverse range of scientific, cultural, and sports activities. Over the years, XJTU students have achieved outstanding results in international and domestic competitions, including the SAE Aero Design Competition, VEX Robotics World Championship, and International Mathematical Modeling Challenge.

The university has jointly established several educational institutions and programs, including Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design and Innovation, and two Confucius Institutes, respectively located at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom and Yamanashi Gakuin University in Japan. It has also collaborated with Samarkand State University in Uzbekistan to establish a China Center, pioneering an innovative "language + technology" cooperation model in Central Asia.

XJTU initiated the University Alliance of the Silk Road, attracting 207 universities from 45 countries and regions to join diverse cooperation efforts.

XJTU has established ‌106 international undergraduate student recruitment bases across 27 countries and regions‌. In 2024, it achieved the ‌highest rating of Class A+‌ in the re-certification of higher education quality for international students in China.

XJTU currently has four campuses: Xingqing, Yanta, Qujiang, and iHarbour, covering an area of approximately 5,000 mu (333 hectares).
