Recently, a delegation of the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), led by its president, Ferruccio RESTA, visited XJTU and met with XJTU president, Wang Shuguo. Both sides expressed interest in establishing the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design and expectations for future cooperation. Ferruccio RESTA said that he hopes the Joint School of Design will be more than cooperation between XJTU and POLIMI,but a tie to a closer relationship between Xi'an and Milan, between China and Italy.

At XJTU on the afternoon of September 9, 2019, the XJTU-POLIMI Joint School of Design was inaugurated. Gordon Bruce, a leading industrial designer, was invited to deliver a lecture. "Design is everywhere, from your every decision to your lifestyle choice. Redesigning the mind means you are becoming more mindful about design." Gordon said. He believed that the aim of design education is to train students based on their senses and feelings, keeping people-oriented design at the core.
