XJTU's unmanned intelligent vehicle wins championship

The 13th China Intelligent Vehicle Future Challenge takes place from Nov 24 to 25 in Changshu, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province.

The 13th China Intelligent Vehicle Future Challenge took place from Nov 24 to 25 in Changshu, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province. The team from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU)'s Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics developed an unmanned intelligent vehicle called "Pioneer," which won the championship. Another unmanned intelligent vehicle named "Discovery" received the third-place prize.

The National Natural Science Foundation of China launched the China Intelligent Vehicle Future Challenge in 2009. The objective of the competition is to facilitate the exchange and validation of research progress and the latest achievements in China's research on audiovisual cognitive information processing and unmanned driving through real-world environment competitions.

The goal is to promote the integration of fundamental research in artificial intelligence with physically implementable systems, generating original technological outcomes that meet the country's needs.

The 13th China Intelligent Vehicle Future Challenge focused on unmanned driving for travel services. The competition included tasks such as specifying arbitrary pick-up and drop-off points in both above-ground and underground environments. It aimed to enhance and validate the seamless connection experience offered by unmanned driving technology for passenger travel services. The competition addressed challenges related to autonomous driving in complex underground parking environments, as well as the ability of unmanned vehicles to handle complex traffic situations, such as road closures and construction guidance, in environments with complex lighting, limited visibility, and high disorder among traffic participants.

Additionally, the competition assesses the ability of unmanned vehicles to drive safely and independently in various future traffic environments, including residential areas.

Xi'an Jiaotong University's Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, established in 1986, is one of the oldest dedicated research institutions in China engaged in artificial intelligence research.
