Xi'an Jiaotong University Delegation Visits Egypt: Promoting Cooperation and Educational Exchanges between XJTU and Egypt
On January 7-8, 2025, a delegation from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), led by Vice President Shan Zhiwei, visited Egypt to strengthen bilateral relations and educational exchanges between China and Egypt. The delegation held discussions on topics including student educational programs at XJTU, research collaborations, and joint initiatives between Chinese and Egyptian universities and enterprises. Meetings were conducted with representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, local educational institutions, and Egyptian branches of Chinese enterprises.
On January 7, the delegation, accompanied by Science and Technology Counsellor Zhang Huasheng and Second Secretary Pan Xiaohan, visited the Association of Egyptian Scholars in China (AESC), where they held a meeting with President Professor Nasser Abdelaal. Professor Abdelaal shared insights into AESC's establishment and its efforts to promote student development and mobility between China and Egypt. Vice President Shan Zhiwei introduced XJTU and expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation with AESC to support Egyptian students studying in China. Zhang Huasheng emphasized the importance of deepening educational collaboration between the two countries and encouraged further communication between XJTU and AESC.
Later that day, the delegation had a lunch meeting with Counsellors Zhang Huasheng and Zhang Yi, during which they expressed their gratitude to the embassy for its hospitality and continued commitment to strengthening educational, scientific, technological, and cultural ties between China and Egypt.
In the evening, the delegation visited XD-EGEMAC High Voltage Electricity Equipment Co. Ltd., where they were welcomed by General Manager Li Jianfei, Deputy General Manager Zhang Yanwen, and Representative Guo Mengchen. The delegation toured the high-voltage workshop and learned about XD-EGEMAC's operations in Egypt, commending their efforts and achievements. Vice President Shan highlighted the ongoing collaboration between XJTU and XD Group in technology R&D and joint project development, expressing hope for expanding cooperation and joint talent development programs to support the enterprise's international strategies.
On January 8, the delegation visited Victory College, where they were greeted by Headmaster Heba Fouad. Vice President Shan praised the school for its role as a leading international high school in Cairo and expressed hope that teachers and students at Victory College would participate in XJTU's programs and study in China. The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to formalize their partnership and exchanged commemorative plaques.
The delegation then visited Badr University in Cairo (BUC), where they were warmly received by the Chairman Dr. Hassan El-Kalla, Vice President Professor Mahmoud Fahmi, and other university representatives. The two universities engaged in fruitful discussions on educational cooperation. Vice President Shan introduced XJTU's recent advancements in research and international exchanges and invited BUC to join the University Alliance of the Silk Road, an initiative led by XJTU. Dr. El-Kalla shared BUC's experiences and achievements in quality education, research development, and internationalization, expressing a strong desire to collaborate with XJTU.
In the afternoon, the delegation hosted the Sino-Egypt Engineering Disciplines Development Forum and Study at XJTU Admission Seminar, where they were joined by Professor Karim Eldash, Vice President of Benha University, Professor Gamal Elsayed Abed Elaziz, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Benha University, Professor Omayma Ghanem, Former Cultural Counsellor of the Egyptian Embassy in China, Ms. Sara Abu Zaid, Representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Egypt, and Professor Sherif of Helwan University. Vice President Shan delivered a detailed presentation on study opportunities at XJTU, emphasizing international exchange programs and the university's English-medium undergraduate programs in key disciplines. Professor Lei Yaguo, Executive Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Tang Chenglong, Assistant Dean of the School of Energy and Power Engineering, and Professor Kou Peng, Assistant Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, presented reports on the development of engineering disciplines at XJTU. Representatives from XD-EGEMAC, Huawei Technologies Egypt, and China State Construction Engineering Corporation Egypt also gave speeches. During the forum, XJTU signed MOUs with four local high schools to enhance educational cooperation. Pan Xiaohan and Wang Xiaoyang, Second Secretaries at the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, attended the event.
In the evening, the delegation visited Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. Egypt, where they discussed talent development needs in Egypt with General Manager Mr. Ma Ben. The discussion focused on aligning XJTU's educational programs with workforce demands, paving the way for future cooperation in talent cultivation.
Representatives from XJTU's Graduate School, School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Energy and Power Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, and School of International Education accompanied Vice President Shan throughout the visit.
