Professor Liu Jinjun from XJTU wins 2025 PELS Award
Liu Jinjun is a professor from the School of Electrical Engineering at XJTU.
According to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power Electronics Society (PELS), Professor Liu Jinjun from the School of Electrical Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has been awarded the 2025 Harry A. Owen, Jr. Distinguished Service Award for his "contributions to PELS membership development and international collaborations".
Over the past two decades, Professor Liu has made exceptional contributions to PELS. In 2004, he served as the secretary-general of the organizing committee for the IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics and Motion Control (IPEMC 2004), jointly hosted by the China Electrotechnical Society and PELS.
From 2005 to 2014, he served as a member of the PELS Administrative Committee (AdCom), regional liaison officer for the Asia-Pacific and liaison officer for China. From 2015 to 2021, he served as vice-president of PELS and was elected chairman of the China Power Supply Society at the end of 2021.
Professor Liu played a pivotal role in establishing and developing the ECCE Asia conference, a model collaboration between PELS and national power electronics academic organizations in China, Japan, South Korea, and other Asian countries.
He further promoted regional collaboration by initiating the Asian Power Electronics Coordination Committee (APECC) in 2012, comprising the China Electrotechnical Society, Korean Institute of Power Electronics (KIPE), and IEEJ/IAS Japan.
As a long-term voting member and multi-term chairman of APECC, he advanced student activities, educational partnerships, journal publications, and conference exchanges. In 2019, he founded the Asian PhD School on Advanced Power Electronics, an annual summer program inviting about 10 global experts to train doctoral students and young scholars.
During his tenure as IEEE PELS vice president (2015–21), Professor Liu led comprehensive membership development initiatives, achieving the fastest membership growth rate in PELS history (2015–19). He restructured membership affairs, optimized operational systems, formulated strategic policies, and pioneered new programs that are still benefiting members.
