Zhang Liqun introduces XJTU's approaches to integrating AI with higher education.

Zhang Liqun, president of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), which was held on July 26 in Shanghai.

During the "AI Future Forum: Superintelligence, Boundless Co-Creation", Zhang participated in a forward-looking dialogue on the impact of AI on university science education and the ecosystem for scientific research innovation, exploring the reform of higher education for the AGI era.

He highlighted that XJTU has pioneered China's first AI undergraduate program, established a national key laboratory and a national AI industry-education innovation platform, and developed a "1+1+X" AI+ curriculum system. This also includes creating 87 intelligent courses and training 12 vertical large models for specialized fields, positioning the institution at the forefront of AI-enabled education.

This year, XJTU is building a new talent cultivation system, advancing collaborative technological innovation, and exploring new paradigms for university governance and industry-academia integration.

The university recently announced the achievements for the Ministry of Education's "101 Plan" in AI, releasing 12 core textbooks to cultivate talent that integrates patriotism with innovation. Zhang also expressed hope for global collaboration that would shape AI-empowered higher education and contribute to a shared future for humanity.

The WAIC has been held seven times since its inception in 2018. This year's event featured five core components: conferences, exhibitions, awards, experiential activities, and innovation incubation. It brought together top scientists, entrepreneurs, government officials, scholars, international organizations, investors, and startups, showcasing "Chinese wisdom" and the "Shanghai approach" while creating new global opportunities through China's development.
